The modern introduction to football, unless you play it seriously, is via the TV/Internet, so location is less important (to supporters) these days.

They seem to be getting enough of a fix to satisfy themselves/the advertisers, but, in my opinion, are missing out on a big part of supporting a team by not going to (home) games and bonding (even subconsciously).

Talking about a game standing around the water-cooler/playground the next day doesn't count.

When I moved up here from Southend many years ago nobody supported Norwich, it was all Man U, Leeds, Arsenal and Chelsea.

None of the lads were interested in following their 'local club' and couldn't understand why I followed WH (mind you, over the years I've often fucking wondered why too..) when there were all these successful teams about.

So it's been going on for years, it just that sky etc have made all the teams far more accessible to watch so kids pick the 'best' from an early age.

Thats my theory anyway..

so are northerners that support west ham cunts then ?

No, because they are not going for the most successful team. If we became successful a lot of cunts will start supporting West Ham then, and they will be cunts..

If we somehow reach the fabled next level, and win, say, 7 titles in the space of, say,10 seasons, then I'd have serious reservations about any non-locals who then started to follow us.

There are a few who jumped aboard in the mid 60s, but I let off those who have stuck with us until now. 1980 was a loooong time ago. Not much glory to hunt chez les Hammers, of late.

Boring. Unimaginative and vast majority have a inferiority complex. They feel the need to hitch there wagon onto something successful. Maybe not cunts. But definitely a little pathetic.

A Man U bloke on TV, was being interviewed and was shown a picture of George Best and was asked to identify who it was, he had no fucking clue even when given the initials GB, when he was told who it was he said ah yes he played for England, no sorry, for Eire

Utter fucking cunt

Living up North, I know at least two Northerners who support us, and because they, or their parents, were impressed by the "West Ham way" - thought we played the right way under Greenwood and then Lyall.

That's not the same as glory-hunting, as glory is measured in trophies...

Re: Londoners who support Liverpool or Man Utd.......
I can speak from personal experience here.

Unless you have a Dad or somebody in your household to guide you, you are often pretty much in the dark when you get interested in football, and choose your team (...or it chooses you).

I was in this position when I was 9. West Ham were in the FA Cup final (1975), and I was just at the right age to latch onto a team that I saw on the telly, liked what I saw and who were doing well. I actually thought they were a lot closer to me geographically than it turned out they were, but it was too late by the time I found out (I thought it was the Ham between Kingston and Richmond!)

Also, when you are a kid, proximity and going to games doesn't really come in as a factor. I didn't even think about going to a game until I was taken to one when I was 12.

I think many may come to realise this is important later on when it's too late to reconsider!

That's not always the case of being guided. Unfortunately my old man hated football so there was no connection on a Dad/Son on that level. For me it was living very close to the Boleyn and you could see the top of the South Bank floodlights from our front garden. I used to sit on the wall listening to the cheers or groans of the crowd on match days.

I can also recall being at school in the mid 70's and if you didn't support West Ham you were in serious danger of getting a good kicking. There were three or four who braved it ( Liverpool, Man U and Leeds ) and managed to keep it quiet. There was one kid who moved to my school from Southampton and was a Saints fan he got left alone, because I suppose you could hardly accuse him of being a glory hunter.

Agree with the op. It dosent help the bt and sky have them on almost every game. I was very pleased with last night's result. They really think they are special. Unless they are a close friend I would never discuss football with them.

I often wonder why all the Blackburn ‘fans’ have evaporated. There were a fair few in London and Essex wearing their shirts back in the 90’s.

......tend to belong to a particular ethnic group (South Asian), which is probably why loads of scouse were moaning about the availability of tickets/cost of flights etc (most of their reggie supporters had snapped them up)

Re: Londoners who support Liverpool or Man Utd.......
Seems like it’s going to further extremes now with loads of kids going round wearing Barcelona or Real kit. It’s all about who is the ‘best’ team when you’re a kid if you don’t have any guidance. These days everyone seems to be converging on supporting one of just a handful of clubs. Very sad really.

My brother in Law is a southern Liverpool fan with zero connection to the club. He’s in no way trappy though so we don’t ever have discussions about it.

I mostly enjoy their excuses when you ask why they support a certain team despite having no reason to, seen as they can never just come out and admit it was because they won everything all the time.

I went to school in Romford,I'm 51,I'd say 70% of kids my age supported us.5% Arsenal,5% Tottenham10% Liverpool the rest were bookworms or fatties.
Most kids were white and the 10% who "supported' Liverpool were smug wankers who couldn't kick a ball for toffee.

i know a couple of people in Darlo with no connection to east London, but who are West Ham.fans, which i dont really get for the younger ones but the older ones were drawn to the club on the back of the World Cup win. Technically i think that makes them glory hunters.. Or does it?

I agree. That's why I put 'unless you have a Dad or somebody in your household to guide you, you are OFTEN pretty much in the dark..'

Living very close to a ground or a club having a serious dominance in the playground when you are at school are clearly other factors that may guide you towards supporting a particular team.

I think most of the people I know who live down here who support Liverpool/Man Utd etc, generally do because their Dad or a close family member supported that team, and they've been brainwashed from an early age.

I was just walking up the Hampstead Rd following two old, scruffy Bangladeshi women with their four kids in immaculate (and new, by the looks of it) Real Madrid shirts.

I KNOW they almost certainly don't understand what they are doing but a little part of my brain says 'so you stopped having to shit in a hole in the ground and the UK saved you and your kids from being crushed to death when your sweatshop crumbled to the ground or stopped having to scavenge rubbish dumps for plastic bottles and you decided you should support a Spanish team, eh?'

Am I a cunt for thinking that? I'm honestly not sure.

Re: Londoners who support Liverpool or Man Utd.......
Maybe they were admirers of General Franco?

‘Supporting’ Real Madrid is the same as the London fans of Liverpool, Man U & Man City.
Just an indication of an arrested development , inability to face disappointments in an adult way and chronic uncontrollable bed wetting.

Re: Londoners who support Liverpool or Man Utd.......
I watched the game at my lical un Wokingham. Absolutely rammed and i'd say 70 % of blokes were in Liverpool shirts but not one scouse accent could be heard. Fair few lads in Madrid shirts but i suspect they were Man Utd fans on a wind up. This kind of thing used to really piss me off but these days i dont give a toss. Just one of the many aspects if modern football and the sky generation.
